&bull NOTES, QUOTES
22 May 2012 at 11:26pm
--2B Chris Getz was placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday with a deep bruise in his left ribcage. Getz aggravated the injury with a slide into second base Monday when he attempted to stretch a single into a double. Getz first hurt the ribs in a collision on the basepaths May 16. --INF Johnny Giavotella and rookie INF Irving Falu will platoon at second base in the absence of 2B Chris Getz, who went on the disabled list Tuesday with a bruised left ribcage. Manager Ned Yost said the switch-hitting Falu would start against right-handers, while Giavotella, who swings right-handed, would start against southpaws. Falu, who singled Tuesday, has hit safely in his first nine major league games, tying Mike Kingery (1986) for the club-record hitting streak to begin a big-league career. --RHP Luke Hochevar took the 3-2 loss Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium, giving up three runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out eight and walked three. It was Hochevar's third consecutive solid outing. In that span, he has permitted seven earned runs and 16 hits in 19 2/3 innings, walking five and striking out 19, but he is 1-2. Hochevar, the first pick in the 2006 draft, has a 32-47 career record. --RF Jeff Francoeur, who did not hit his first home run until May 13, has homered in back-to-back games at Yankee Stadium. Francoeur, who went 2-for-4 Tuesday, is 7-for-13 in his past three games. --RHP Blake Wood, who is scheduled to undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery, was transferred from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. A move was necessary to make space on the 40-man roster for LHP Will Smith, who had his contract purchased from Class AAA Omaha. Wood was 6-6 with a 4.30 ERA in 106 relief appearances the past two seasons, but he was hurt in spring training and did not pitch this season. --LHP Doug Davis pitched five no-hit innings, with no walks and six strikeouts, in an extended spring training game against the Reds. Davis, a veteran big-leaguer, signed a minor league contract with the Royals last week. Once he increases his pitch count, he will report to the Royals' Class AAA Omaha affiliate. BY THE NUMBERS: 6-12 -- The Royals' record when LHP Bruce Chen or RHP Luke Hochevar is the starting pitcher. QUOTE TO NOTE: "It's nice to beat the Yankees. Yankees are Yankees everywhere. It's the team everybody's talking about. But, for me, the Yankees are like any other team. I say to myself, 'Anybody coming to the plate with a bat is dangerous.' So I try to treat them like any other team," -- RHP Felipe Paulino, who is 2-0 against the Yankees and has not yielded a run to them in 12 2/3 innings this season.

&bull INSIDE PITCH
22 May 2012 at 11:26pm
After spending his first night as a major-leaguer in the bullpen, left-hander Will Smith make a spot start for the Royals on Wednesday in the series finale at Yankee Stadium. Smith was promoted from Class AAA Omaha, where he was 1-3 with a 4.01 ERA in nine starts. He had allowed 65 hits and 13 walks while striking out 37 in 51 2/3 innings. "We want to see what Will Smith can do," manager Ned Yost said. "His numbers aren't like eye-popping, but he's been throwing better. He developed a slider last year, and he's starting to put it all together. He's got a lot of maturity and composure." Smith wasn't needed in long relief Tuesday, so he will start against the Yankees in place of right-hander Luis Mendoza. In his final two Pacific Coast League starts, Smith gave up three earned runs and 14 hits in 14 2/3 innings, striking out seven and walking one. Smith was 13-9 with a 3.85 ERA last season with Class AA Northwest Arkansas, leading the Texas League in innings (161 1/3) and victories. The Royals acquired Smith, 22, in a July 22, 2010, trade with the Angels. Smith and right-hander Sean O'Sullivan came to Kansas City in exchange for infielder Alberto Callaspo.
