The Pleasure of Being Robbed - Trailer
3 Oct 2008 at 3:00am
The story of a young woman whose compulsive curiosity leads to bold, elaborate acts of theft, Josh Safdie’s THE PLEASURE OF BEING ROBBED is a beguiling blend of casual comedy and subtle, unsettling mystery. The film, the debut feature by 24-year-old New York writer-director Safdie, was the Closing Night film of the 2008 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight and the only film from the U.S. to play in that section.

Role Models - Trailer 1
2 Oct 2008 at 3:00am
Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott star in Role Models as Danny and Wheeler, two salesmen who trash a company truck on an energy drink-fueled bender. Upon their arrest, the court gives them a choice: do hard time or spend 150 service hours with a mentorship program. After one day with the kids, however, jail doesn’t look half bad. Surrounded by annoying do-gooders, Danny struggles with his every neurotic impulse to guide Augie (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) through the trials of becoming a man. Unfortunately, the guy just dumped by his girlfriend (Elizabeth Banks) has only sarcasm to offer a bashful 16-year-old obsessed with medieval role play. Meanwhile, charming Wheeler tries to trade in an addiction to partying and women to assist a fifth-grader named Ronnie (Bobb’e Thompson) redirect his foul-mouthed ways. It would probably help if Ronnie’s new mentor wasn’t an overgrown adolescent whose idea of quality time includes keggers in Venice Beach. Once the center’s ex-con director (Jane Lynch) gives them an ultimatum, Danny and Wheeler are forced to tailor their brand of immature wisdom to their charges. And if they can just make it through probation without getting thrown in jail, the world’s worst role models will prove that, sometimes, it takes a village idiot to raise a child.

Frontrunners - Trailer
2 Oct 2008 at 3:00am
FRONTRUNNERS is a smart and funny political documentary that follows the student council presidential campaign at one of the countryʼs most prestigious public high schools: Stuyvesant High School in New York City. An entertaining and symbolic campaign film, put forth in classic verité style, we follow four charming and idiosyncratic candidates as they navigate an electoral process that is said to be one of the most competitive at the high school level. These teenaged candidates face the same issues as candidates of any age, such as picking the ʻrightʼ running mate, shaking as many hands as possible, preparing for televised debates, impressing the pundits and journalistic community, addressing sensitive race-related issues, and mobilizing an apathetic voter base. A microcosm of the U.S. Presidential elections, Caroline Suh's film shows politicking and pluralities through the lens of the adolescent experience.

Something is alive deep in the shadowy forest. Can a frightened outcast find safety in the darkness or does the ultimate terror wait in the most unexpected place of all? Francesc Orella and Mar Sodupe co-star in this chilling Spanish horror thriller from acclaimed director Isidro Ortiz (FAUSTO 5.0) and featuring art direction by Pilar Revuelta, Oscar® winner for PAN’S LABYRINTH.

Notorious - Trailer 1a
1 Oct 2008 at 3:00am
In just a few short years, The Notorious B.I.G. rose from the streets of Brooklyn to become one of the most influential hip hop artists of all time. B.I.G. was a gifted storyteller; his narratives about violent life on the streets were told with a gritty, objective realism that won him enormous respect and credibility. His stories were universal and gave a voice to his generation.

Hank & Mike - Trailer
1 Oct 2008 at 3:00am

August Evening - Trailer
30 Sep 2008 at 3:00am
August Evening follows an aging undocumented farm worker named Jaime and his young, widowed daughter-in-law, Lupe, as their lives are thrown into upheaval. Lupe is more of a daughter to Jaime than his own children, and the two try to stick together… but change is inevitable. At the heart of the story is the conflict between generations. Aging parents and grown children have difficulty expressing both their love and mutual disappointment in each other. A father recognizes the unstoppable force of time and must say goodbye to his daughter so she can start her own life. The film is naturalistic in tone, featuring humming cicadas, ethereal music, chicken farms, meaningful glances, and rustling leaves. It includes subtle romance, gentle humor and heartbreaking tragedy, but it should not be depressing. Instead, we concentrate on the Japanese idea of "mono no aware," which is difficult to translate, but involves finding peace with life's imperfections. Heartwarming scenes highlight the bittersweet nature of life, finding resolution in the warmth of the characters, the beauty in sadness, and the universality of the human experience.
